Hiking Tip: “Wilde Wasser Weg” in the Stubai Valley

Starting point near our hiking hotel

Updated on June 18, 2026

Today we’d like to share a very special hiking tip with you for the Stubai Alps. An absolute MUST during your next hiking vacation with us at the Berg Genuss Hotel Neustift: a visit to the Wilde Wasser Weg.

Experience the element of water in all its facets along all three stages of this popular hiking trail:
You’ll find small floodplains and alluvial lands, or you can watch thundering waterfalls and breathe in the wonderfully fresh air right by the falls. Further up, you’ll marvel at a turquoise-blue mountain lake and shimmering glacier fields. A truly special experience featuring an ascent of 1,250 meters in elevation and a length of approximately 22 km.
At the end of the first stage, you’ll be rewarded with one of the biggest highlights. The GRAWA Waterfall. At 85 m, it’s probably the widest waterfall in the Eastern Alps! As a hiking-specialized hotel, we naturally offer you special hiking perks and a prime location so you can enjoy your hiking vacation “with complete peace of mind.”

The most important things at a glance:

  • An enchanting hiking trail in three stages that starts very close by—thanks to the central location of our hiking hotel.
  • Hiking extras for hikers right at the hotel: free rental of new hiking backpacks and hiking poles, an on-site hiking room with a shoe dryer, a hiking shuttle just 50 m away …
  • In addition to the hiking tips here on the blog, you’ll also receive plenty of tips every day in our morning newsletter or during our personalized, one-on-one hiking consultations at the front desk. Be sure to join us for the weekly talk, “Hiking in the Stubai Valley,” right here at our hotel.
  • With the STUBAI.SUPER.CARD (the card is included in the price), you can use the hiking buses and mountain railways for free.

What do you think of the WildeWasserWeg?

The starting and end point of this exciting tour is the WildeWasserArena at the quarry in Ranalt. This is about 15 minutes away by car from our Berg Genuss Hotel Neustift.

In the WildeWasserArena you can park in the parking lot along the main road, which is signposted “WildeWasserWeg”.

TTips & Info on the WildeWasserWeg:

The WildeWasserWeg trail itself takes you about 1,250 m uphill to the impressive Sulzenau Glacier. For this reason, we recommend taking this tour during the summer months: between June and September.
What we especially like about the WildeWasserWeg is that you can decide for yourself how far you want to go. At the end of each of the three stages, you’ll be rewarded with a special highlight.

Follow the 3 stages on the interactive map:

Wild Waters Trail – Stage 1:

At the beginning, the trail leads you along the banks of the Ruetz through the spectacular Ruetz cataract. Afterwards you will reach the Tschangelair Alm and the mighty Grawa waterfall, the highlight of this stage.

Wild Water Trail – Stage 2:

The trail winds its way up the steep Almsteig. You should wear sturdy shoes and be sure-footed here, as the ground tends to be wet. After about 1 hour, you’ll reach Sulzenegg. From here, the trail continues on relatively flat ground through a valley basin to the idyllically situated Sulzenau-Alm (open from mid-May to late October, http://www.sulzenau-alm.at/). Along this stretch, you’ll enjoy fantastic views of the glacier the entire time.
But keep going a little further, as the highlight of this stage awaits you: the base of the Sulzenau Falls. This is arguably the most impressive of the three waterfalls.
From here, you’ll reach the Sulzenau Hut via gentle switchbacks (mid-June through mid-September, https://www.sulzenauhuette.at/).

Wild Water Trail – Stage 3:

From the Sulzenau Hut, the trail leads to the foot of the Sulzenau Farmer. At the end of the WildeWasserWeg you will reach the glacier lake and the glacier gate at the foot of the Sulzenau glacier. This is located at about 2500 m above sea level and is an impressive natural spectacle that you should not miss. So enjoy the magnificent view of the jagged towers of the glacier break, the many small waterfalls and the snow dome at the top of the Zuckerhütl. The Zuckerhütl is the highest mountain in the Stubai Alps.
